52% fall in new mortgage approvals in 2008
The number of new mortgages for house buyers approved by the UK’s banks fell by 52% in 2008. Industry figures indicate that the number of mortgages approved for house purchase rose in December 2008 from November’s record low. This is no surprise at all as the number of mortgages available are a fraction of what they were a year or so ago. On top of this, the difficulty in obtaining a mortgage i.e. having good deposits, credit scores etc mean this shoudl be well expected
