The first thing buyers should do is determine how much they can afford. It is important to factor in the down payment, loan origination fee, closing costs, realtor commissions and homeowners insurance.

It's good to have someone reliable to assist you (for example come along for property viewing). It doesn't have to be an expert, could be a family member or a friend, who will be able to asses and advise. They might be able to notice things that you can't see.

Also a good mortgage adviser too so they are able to walk you through the whole process and make sure it goes smoothly & provide expert advice on which lender to use.
