Good point about renting - that's a big reason why we did that when we moved from Yorkshire to Scotland - we weren't sure where abouts in Scotland we wanted to live, so we rented in a relatively central location, and have driven round a huge chunk of Scotland to locate which areas we felt we could live in and like.

Which parts of Scotland have you explored, Brian? I did that a bit and lived north of Inverness at one point but then finally settled back down in Angus.

Heh, I'm looking very much around the Inverness area - Black Isle, and villages to the east of Inverness (Cawdor, Clephanton, Croy, etc) up to and just beyond Nairn.

Apparently placed like Yugoslavia and Hungary are great for gorgeous cheap houses and the scenery is lovey too. Maybe its something to consider if you want to move abroad.

I used to live in Dornoch, and if you feel like going that far north, there are some bargains. The Black Isle seems expensive to me but you do have the proximity of Inverness. Were I to go back north, I'd think about around Beauly.

Beauly doesn't seem too bad, but it seems most of the house are bungalows, with little choice otherwise.

Actually, many of the houses I've seen around the Inverness area are rarely two-storey builds, except in Inverness itself - otherwise it seems one and a half storey homes seem the norm.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you are considering an international move. I am here in Sunny Sarasota, Florida, and have been a professional in the Real Estate industry for 5 years. The residential real estate business is government regulated here, and we have very strict guidelines to which we must adhere. Sarasota is one of the most desireable places on the Gulf of Mexico. Our food is top notch, and our beaches are world class!
