Ask the mortgage company and see what they consider to be the proper accepted method of cancellation.

Depends on whether you are referring to a mortgage application or redeeming a mortgage that you already hold - personally I find fax a bit hit and miss. I've lost count of the number that lenders say don't arrive or can't be read. To ensure its actioned always send a letter and send it recorded delivery!
