Rightmove is very useful. I would not go just to the cheaper... try to balance price and location. The cheaper tends to become expensive :-)

I think Northamptonshire is quite a cheap place for property. Try places like Rushden or Raunds.
Thought like most places with low property prices, this also dictates the "niceness" of the area.

I think there is quite a lot of social housing in that area.

Another area I notice relatively good property prices is Peterborough. It's got some good job prospects too.

The cheapest houses are at in general, alot of its down to the specific area though, you'll find areas with Universities local are cheap because of the student lets.

For most people looking to get on the property ladder it's also an issue of the places in the UK where it makes sense to buy vs. rent. Of course generally prices in the North are lower than their southern counterparts, but many are scared of putting any cash into homes anywhere at present.
