The truth is that those who have done the "most wrong" i.e the "real bad guys" are usually in top security prisons. The least secure prisons are open prisons for people who have committed lesser crimes or are to be shortly released

i won't really feel secure living near a prison, all the more if my home has a view of it.

I'm not convinced I'd be particularly happy at living so close to a prison - is it just being unreasonably paranoid, or is it simply that there's nothing wrong at all with your home overlooking a prison complex?

Yes, but Raploch is going to get torn down, right?

Have a friend doing town planning for Stirling Council, and that seemed to be the plan...

I don't think it's so much living near the prisoners that bothers me as it is near buildings that are usually very institutional looking and ugly. One would assume that security measures would be adequate for the safety of homes nearby, but you can't do a damn thing about the view.

Good point Vicki, those areas are usually not very pleasant.

Actually, there's been a lot in the press about serious criminals literally walking out of prisons in the UK recently.

The Home Office here is in something of a mess.

Oh, I know. The funniest bit was up near me in Scotland ...they were allowing rapists and paedophiles to have weekend passes so 'the family units' wouldn't be destroyed. Then they were surprised when a lot of those inmates didn't show back up on Monday mornings. Doh!

Yeah, not too bright. Assuming the authorities can keep prisoners locked up and out of society is not a safe way to think IMO. Even if the prisoners do stay behind bars, you still have to think of resale value.
