Default elongating a part of your home
while i was researching for ways to make a room appear larger, i chanced upon a tip in elongating some parts of a room/home...one article i read said that you can make use of repetitive shafts of light to achieve this. you may make use of sconces in your hallway to elongate it, or place a line of candles above your fireplace to make it appear longer...i assume placing sconces along a stairway may also do the same...i haven't tried it though...

I've seen this cheated on TV. They use different shade of paint...lighter in the corners i believe to make them look more open. it seemed to work too!

One of Terrence Conran's old tricks that I've used is to paint small room in dark colors. They surprisingly make them look larger! Worked great in a small dining room with no windows ...to my great surprise!

You can also put mirrors in to make your rooms seem larger.
