Default Facelifting a plain 70's style exterior - any ideas?

Hi

We bought our house back almost 2 years ago now and have been concentrating on the internal reburbishments. Our property was constructed in the 70's, it's detached, and i feel it's slightly lacking a little character externally.

Has anyone done any home improvements on facelifting the front exterior of a home?

I'm wondering about the stone edging's some propertys' have, but I don't know what they are called to research it!

Any tips would be appreciated.

many thanks

Interesting - I'm immediately wondering whether any planning issues come into force when changing the look of a property's exterior?
