Question First time buyer and the other

This may be a silly question, but I guess thats what the forum is for . . .

My girlfriend and I are about to start hunting for mortgages. However,

1) My girlfriend is a first time buyer
2) I have had a mortgage, but sold the house and payed off the mortgage in 2007.

Therefore, can we have the first time buyer privileges? Esp, wrt stamp duty.

Thank you for any info you can share.

Only if your girlfriend buys it in her name!
Not worth doing just for a bit of Stamp Duty saved!

If she buys in her name only, you wont get anything when you split up too!

NHE is exactly right. How much is the property you're intending to buy, since after 250k the benefits stop anyway.

Ill echo what Dan S says, you will only benefit from the 'first time buyer privileges' if you are buying up to the 250k limit. First time buyer mortgages are not anything different to those that are buying for the second time really. Well, there may be a couple semi-exclusive deals but nothing that would concern you too much.

The trouble with a lot of the first time buyer deals is that they include certain caveats like 'you must now bank with us' or 'you must save your deposit in one of our savings accounts'. They know they've got a captive audience so they'll add these seemingly small but extremely lucrative (for them) catches.
