Definently. I usually go through the ads in the local newspaper or the yellowpages, because there are some qualified agents in there that DO take the time to help you.

I also think it is a good idea to ask friends who they like, but I always try to remember that it is perfectly respectable to sort of interview agents to see if you like them or not. If you're looking for something specific that might take some time, get someone you like and trust!

When we bought our house, we called around to a couple of real estate offices. If they didn't have anyone to talk with us right then, we said thank you and went on to the next one. I think it's important for an agent to be reachable, and I would definitely talk with friends and see who they used, how they liked them, etc.

If there's no-one in the office, that's a good sign - it means they're all out and about doing things for clients, surely? Viewings, valuations, etc. If they're out doing things, that shows they're busy and lots of people are using them. Again, a good sign.

If the agents are all mooching around in the office, that would raise alarm bells for me......
