Default How to start with construction of my dream house?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good resource to find contractors? I have been looking online and all I have seen are sites where you have to describe the job then wait to get called from a contractor or if I find a directory type of site there is a limited number of contractors in my area, but I know there are many more. I am trying to build my first house and I was planning on hiring all the contractors so I need a good resource to find them. Something with reviews and article would also be very beneficial, please let me know if anyone knows of a good place to look.

The best place to find contractors is not always through the internet. Ask around your friends, neighbours etc and see if they can recommend a contractor. It is also easier to employ a main contractor for a fixed price build who will use there own builders or sub contractors that way if any problems arise you are only dealing with one person all the time. Make sure you get a few quotes and that everything you have asked for is included.

gotta agree with Deb, I would suggest you keep an eye on local building projects and tap up the subbies on these, good contractors always know others, good luck

Hi

It is a good idea to search on the internet, but you can't always trust all the information that is available online. Speaking to friends, family, colleagues and neighbors is a better idea. Find out who does their building or if they know of any contractors. That way you will also be able to inspect the builder' previous work and speak to people who have worked with him before.

Hi Khengonzales

There are several books available in Amazon that deal with this exact issue. I'm not sure of the reviews but I believe Sarah Beeny has one called 'Getting the builders in'. Don't quote me on that though. Worth a browse for other authors who've bought the teeshirt!
