Default Is it worth extending?

Previously one could get a loft done say for 25K and your house price would shot up by 40K. In these depressed times is it worth doing up a garage into another room. Or extending the kitchen. Or renovating the bathroom?
Are there too many white elephants already and that buyers seek properties that will not cost the earth? Will one get one's money back if it's all spent on improvements?

What's your main motivation? Is it because a conversion would be useful for you, or is it simply a money issue?

Well the house and the estate has to be divided and sold. The cash in the bank (ISAs) is there.
Say 40K in investments as opposed to 40k in extending the kitchen and making a room out of the garage. Timeline to sell is 2 years hoping home prices go up higher than ISAs.

The other option is to buy the other party out (150K) with savings of our own along with that 40K and keep the house as it is for myself to sell or keep at my leisure.
