Loft conversion with minimal space - possible?
I live in a single storey barn conversion and have listed planning permission for an extra bedroom (gable end). I want to do a loft conversion for this new extension but we cannot raise the overall roof height due to planning restrictions. Therefore I have very minimal space to work in. At present, the gap between the ceiling (at its highest point) of the potential loft conversion and the floor (assuming 6 inch joists in the floor) would be at the very most 1.65m. Is that enough to meet Building Regs and/or make it worthwhile? And even getting 1.65m means lowering the ceiling height in the bedroom below to 2.05m. Is there a way to make the floor thickness less than 6 inches, using say steel re-inforcement or similar? Or is this just not enough space to make it realistic? It would be used as a children's room.
