Default Shared renovation works

Hello, I own and rent out a basement flat, the 3 floors above are owned as a whole house by a couple who are renovating the whole property. Noise travelling between the floor/ceiling has always been a problem even when I lived there. The new owners upstairs have suggested putting in noise insulation in their floor whilst the works are taking place. They want me to pay half, it's around £4000. I'm happy to contribute but it's not financially ideal time for me to fork out that kind of money and my flat makes up less than a third of the size of the whole building. The floor size worked on however would be equal. What would you say was a fair percentage for my contribution? Thanks Sebi

Hi as they are the ones making the noise, it should be more their responsiblity than yours. Depending on how far you wanted to take this, you could contact the noise pollution dept at the council who may deem the noise is totally unacceptable.

You could also speak to your freeholder about this and see if there are funds available in service charge fund to contribute.

If you pay service charges, how much do you pay? Have the funds been used towards actually servicing the building? You should ask freeholder.

As you are being affected by the noise i think the most you should pay towards it is 30% i would say.
