Britons who favour Portugal over Spain for a retirement home should consider Madeira.
According to overseas property website, shelteroffshore.com, the island has much to offer.
It forms part of the Portuguese archipelago but has a distinctive character that is slightly more exotic than the mainland.
Madeira’s stunning landscapes contain an established community of expats although there is a good balance between the number of international expats and local Madeirans.
The currency is the euro and English is widely spoken and understood around the capital of Funchal.
Some English TV and radio channels are available and broadband Internet is widespread.
The island’s climate is sub-tropical, rarely dropping below 20 degrees centigrade. Rainfall in the mountainous interior is high, providing a green environment for the majority of the year.
The cost of living is lower than in the UK, property is still more affordable than in most parts of the UK and the pace of life is slower.
Bureaucracy, in particular, moves slowly in Madeira and sorting out residency can take its time.
The island’s coastline is rocky and pebbled so those seeking long sandy beaches should consider its sister island, Porto Santo.
Porto Santo sets more challenges for newcomers than Madeira but the island also offers a distinctive character, laid-back lifestyle and gentle climate.
