Build your own home for £11,000

Argos is selling flatpack homes for just £11,000. The 32ft by 16ft 10in house can be delivered at a cost of £4.95.

According to the catalogue shop chain, there are no special skills required to build it as step-by-step instructions are provided.

The flatpack homes are made from Scandinavian whitewood comprising double-glazed French doors and windows and a felt shingle roof.

Tools required in order to build the house are a ladder, saw, screwdriver, mallet and a tape measure.

However, if you want a bathroom or kitchen, you pay extra and plumb them in yourself.

For £13,099.99, the deluxe Helsinki model is available and comes complete with underfloor heating and oak laminate flooring. Finnforest, the manufacturers, said it takes a day or two to put up and you need at least two people for some of the tasks.

Buyers are advised to build on concrete or compressed gravel foundations and apply timber treatment after construction. Argos warns customers to check on planning permission and building regulations.

Furniture giant Ikea has built the first flatpack village in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The 93 timber-framed homes were snapped up very quickly by first-time buyers struggling to get on the property ladder.

A spokesperson for Ikea said we won’t be selling to property investors. The houses are for people who haven’t been able to get on the property ladder.

The 93 timber-framed homes comprise 36 flats and 57 houses and range in price from £90,000 to £160,000.
