A report from the homeless charity, Shelter, has revealed that in the last year, up to 1 million families have paid their mortgage or rent on their credit card.
An exclusive YouGov survey for the charity’s ROOF magazine reveals the extraordinary lengths some are going in order to keep a roof over their head.
The survey questioned more than 2,000 people and the figure represents 6% of UK homes, according to the charity.
The charity described the figures as a “shocking discovery” and Kay Boycott, Shelter’s director of policy and campaigns, comments: “If people are already struggling to the extent that they fear losing their home, increasing credit card debt cannot be the answer.”
The charity is warning families about the dangers of using credit cards to make repayments on their mortgage or rent and is urging people struggling with their repayments to seek expert advice immediately.
