Work has stopped on the construction of two 55-storey towers in Leeds. The developer, K W Linfoot, has frozen the project until the climate stabilises and an appropriate funding structure can be put in place.
Carillion has been appointed for the construction of the £155m Lumiere development, which was scheduled to take around four years to complete. Carillion had started piling work on the project.
The plans for Lumiere comprised of two towers of 54 storeys, which will house the majority of the residential accommodation. This includes 64 prime apartments providing 6-star accommodation between floors 2 and 10 and a selection of one-and two-bedroom apartments, studios and smart pads. The two uppermost floors will provide penthouse office space.
The plans for the second tower comprise 31 storeys, with the ground floor providing further extensive retail space. Also included are 11 floors of office space together with serviced apartments and 1-and 2-bedroom residential apartments. A small number of duplex apartments will occupy floors 29 and 30.
Richard Dean, the joint managing director at K W Linfoot, has confirmed the temporary closure of the site and his disappointment that the plans for Lumiere are not able to proceed to the anticipated timescale.
The company has taken heed of the current climate and made a sensible and pragmatic decision to put on hold construction at a time when the piling works are complete and before work on the next phase begins.
The company has already invested a considerable amount of time and money to deliver the project and remains committed to progress plans when the market stabilises.
CORRECTION: The original story reported the Lumiere development as in Sheffield. This has now been corrected to Leeds.
