In the last 5 years, Britons who have been burgled have spent £27 billion in an effort to keep their home secure after a break-in.

The figures have been established by a survey commissioned by Intamac Systems, which investigated the costs of burglary to homeowners.

The survey discovered that the main problem after a burglary was the financial outlay, however the emotional burden was just as difficult.

The majority surveyed said nothing could make them feel secure in their property. Over 30% said they had to pack up and move home while those who stayed in their home spent £27 billion on improvements to their security.

David Rimmer of Intamac Systems said while we have tried to put a figure on peace of mind, it seems that feeling safe in your own home is priceless. We talk about our homes being our castles, but after a break-in the householder’s relationship with their home significantly changes, with many striving to regain the apparent air of safety and normality they enjoyed before the experience.

The survey also established that one in four homes in the UK has experienced a break-in, with many responding with additional security. Nearly half of those who experienced a break-in added extra locks while 42% installed outdoor security lights and just over a third changed the locks on the doors.
