Barmston Developments, a joint venture partnership between Wilton Developments and Clugston Developments, is beginning work on a £70m business park in Sunderland in spite of the current economic climate.

The partnership worked closely with Sunderland City Council to create a masterplan for the site, which when completed could create in excess of 4,000 new jobs. The council welcomes the start of construction as a strong endorsement for the region, and an indicator of its economic resilience.

The £70m business park is being built on a 55-acre site next to Nissan, in Sunderland. Work starts on site next Monday following the granting of reserved matters planning permission.

Turbine Business Park will include office and retail space, light industrial units, a hotel and a car showroom. It will also provide a 0.75km access road, known as Turbine Way, which will be completed by autumn this year.

A number of occupiers have already expressed their interest in space on the business park and the developer is looking forward to delivering a vibrant mixed-use scheme that will appeal to those looking for a foothold in the North-East, as well as meeting local occupier needs.

Barmston Developments has appointed Lambert Smith Hampton’s Newcastle office to market the office and industrial space and King Sturge to manage the leisure and retail space.
