Nova Scotia combines property bargains with a tranquil life

Nova Scotia in Canada is becoming a prime location for those seeking an overseas property bargain and a quiet life.

Located in the east of Canada, the province is the second smallest in the country and roughly the size of England.

With a population of around one million and breathtaking scenery the province is attracting British second homeowners who know how to appreciate tranquility.

A furnished waterfront property can be purchased for around £50,000 and with plenty of colonial influences remaining it is easy for ex-pats to feel at home.

The capital is Halifax but Lunenburg is becoming a favorite location for British tourists and buyers, who are drawn in by the pastel-coloured houses, coffee and antiques shops and the working harbour.

Currently a three-bedroom clapboard houses can be purchased in the Lunenburg area from around £65,000.

Prospective buyers should be aware that building insurance and taxes can be expensive and that properties have to be well maintained to withstand the cold winter months.

In the south of Nova Scotia lies Chester, which is famous for its sailing facilities and consequently has some of the highest property prices.

During the summer there is a thriving tourist industry in the area and temperatures can reach 25C.

Nova Scotia’s keenest ex-pat advocates describe the people as polite and considerate, the landscape as unspoilt and peaceful, the traffic as not an issue and the crime rate as lagging so far behind the UK that you can leave your back door and car unlocked.
