New developments in the south

Hundreds of affordable new properties are being built in the south that should appeal to families and first-time buyers.

229 homes are due to be built on the Greenwich Peninsula, near to the entertainment venue O2 – the building previously known as the Dome.

The peninsula is part of the Thames Gateway, the regeneration scheme which is to build 160,000 new properties along the Thames Estuary by 2016.

At Leamouth, East London, three 25-storey towers comprising 437 apartments are on the site of an old electricity switching station, close to the Thames. Prices start from £285,000.

446 one to three-bedroom apartments are being built by Gladedale Homes at the Albert Basin. Also, Crest Nicholson is to begin construction in early 2008 at Gallions Park, this development will contain many environmentally friendly measures including waste management.

Planning permission has been granted to Redrow homes for 272 homes at Barking Central. 10,800 new homes are to be built by Bellway at Barking Reach and this development aspires to be a lively community.

Those looking for a seaside home can look to Southend, Thorpe Bay is becoming known as the Millionaire’s Row of Essex. Vision and The Haven are two new developments, the latter boasting penthouses overlooking the golf course.

Shoeburyness nearby, has more than 50 listed Victorian buildings that have been turned into 465 homes, new-build and period. The plots include Outlook, 4 apartment blocks overlooking the estuary and Townhouses on the Green, which is a cul-de-sac location containing 3 and 4 bedroom family homes.

Just 4 miles from Southend is Great Wakering and Barratt is introducing Millwood Park, 3 and 4 bedroom family homes in a village setting. Future plans include a Marine Plaza which will comprise apartments, hotels, bars and a nightclub.

On the south side of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Dartford, 1,134 homes are to be built and designed by Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway.

Nearby Greenhithe provides 950 homes in 72 acres of parkland and a marina built around a restored abbey. Construction commences this year on Springhead Park which will comprise 600 flats and houses plus community facilities.

Plans for a £250 million regeneration project called the Lewisham Gateway Development will contain 500 flats in the borough of Lewisham.

Greenwich Millennium Village will ultimately provide 1,300 new homes. Uniontwo, the current phase, comprises apartments developed around a new village square and overlooking the man-made Swan Lake. The Rubicon scheme from Bellway in Greenwich town centre will contain two-bed penthouses.

Two new projects have begun at Woolwich. Woolwich Green with 141 one and two-bed flats under £200,000 next to Woolwich Common, and Woolwich Arsenal, which will have 1,200 homes. Prices at Woolwich Green will start from £170,000.
