Hips will emphasise dangerous asbestos problems

The controversial and much talked about Home Information Packs (Hips) will now help to highlight problems with asbestos before a house purchase is finalised, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

The NHIC believes that problems with asbestos can be discovered earlier as a result of Hips. Consequently, buyers can request that the problem be rectified before purchasing the property.

Homeowners should be aware of the dangers of the material and are advised to contact their local authority if they believe that they may encounter asbestos while carrying out DIY work.

Andrew Leech of the NHIC said with the introduction of Home information packs, anything like asbestos should come to light when a survey is carried out.

I would think that if you’ve got your heart set on a house and then you establish that it’s got asbestos lining in it, you should insist that it is put right before you buy, added Mr Leech.

Hips were launched on August 1 to include properties with 4-bedrooms or more and rolled-out to include 3-bedroom properties on September 10. They included all properties from December 14 last year.
