April fall in UK house sales

House sale volumes slid in April, with figures from HM Revenue and Customs showing only 66,000 UK homes changing hands during the month.

The total is down 1,000 from March and by 6,000 year-on-year, leaving sales since the beginning of the year 5% fewer when compared with the first four months of 2010.

Despite a stagnating market, Rightmove recently reported that new sellers increased their asking prices by 1.3% in May, following a 1.7% rise in April.

However, vendor optimism was accompanied by a rise in unsold stock on estate agents’ books to 76 per branch, the highest level for May ever recorded by the firm.

The property portal described the market as in “low transaction limbo”, with few forced sellers driving prices down and few potential buyers genuinely able to proceed because of a lack of mortgage finance.
