Homeowners coming to market in December cut their asking prices by an average £7,772 (or 3.3%), according to Rightmove, with the firm registering the largest monthly fall in new sellers’ ambitions to date.
However, asking prices have actually increased 1.4% over the past 12 months, with the average gap between final asking price and sold price narrowing to 3.7%, compared to 4.9% in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Looking ahead, the property portal expects the UK housing market to continue a slow recovery and is forecasting a national 2% rise in house prices in 2013, assisted by greater competition among mortgage lenders and a shortage of properties for sale.
