On the Greek island of Crete, the houses are small, rustic but cheap. According to Property on Crete, the estate agents, they have 250 properties on their books but most need renovation. An 11-room stone house in Stavromenos (East Crete) with a garden and a sea view is available for £27,000, part of the property is habitable but some restoration is required.
Buyers should anticipate spending the same amount on renovation as they did on the property and the estate agent added that West Crete can be considered costly but East Crete is untouched by tourism.
Plans are underway for Siteia Airport to accept international flights. Currently, visitors use the airports at Iraklion or Chania or travel via Athens, which has daily flights to Iraklion, then Siteia and on to Rhodes.
At Cape Sideros, on the northeast of the island, work has commenced on a 6,000-acre, £543 million development. It will comprise an eco-tourism golf and conference centre, 6 villages and 7,000 beds. It plans to manage rubbish and sewage in an environmentally friendly way.
